I was recently introduced to a polish line that I’d never heard of before called Rainbow Honey. I was graciously gifted their line The Summer of 199X to review by NailPolishCanada.com, and wanted to keep an open mind. As someone who uses mostly Drugstore nail polish I was a bit hesitant to try a completely new brand.
The packaging is adorable! Cheeky, colourful and fun. I also love that they are free of formaldehyde, toluene, and dibutyl phthalate and are never tested on animals. All the polishes had sparkle, and the colours ranged from dark purple to mint and even rainbow confetti! It turns out this line was inspired by the Nintendo game Earthbound! Each colour is a reference to a specific level in the game. Which makes sense as the colours are totally playful and bright.
After a bit of research is discovered that the line’s founder Dee Maldonado brought together her background in the sciences and her experience in the fashion industry to create this line inspired by everything around her. This includes video games, anime and even the television show Breaking Bad which inspired a crystal blue shimmer called Heisenberg : )
I decided to try out Mint Flavour with the Magic Cake as a top coat. If you’ve ever met me, you know that I have a serious obsession with the colour mint. It was even the colour of the bridesmaid dresses in my wedding!
The formula is a bit thin and runny, but it works to the advantage of these polishes. They have very fine shimmer (not rough) and if the formula was thicker it would probably have been goopy and hard to work with. It was easily buildable and with three coats I got full coverage with the Mint Flavour. I added one coat of Magic Cake on my ring finger and I absolutely love it. One coat was enough to get a great layer of blue, yellow and pink confetti sparkles, with a base of fine shimmer. Even as I write this, I am tempted to apply it to the rest of my nails because I love it so much!
Overall, the formula was good and I love the packaging and unique colour selection. I haven’t seen anything like Magic Cake in the drugstore recently. One weird thing though, this polish doesn’t chip. It just kind of pops off of your nail all at once, so I looked down and my nail was completely bare. I noticed this starting to happen after about 3 days which is a decent life for a polish.
If you order from NailPolishCanada.com you can take advantage of free shipping. NailPolishCanada.com also sells Essie, Zoya and a ton of other polishes at great prices (many are priced better than at Shoppers Drugmart)!
Have you been trying out any new nail polish brands? I love to hear what you are loving : )

I love the Apple Kid – bring it next time you’re here – I have tried the Spa Rutual line – but found it too thick and difficult to dry

That Magic Cake is lovely. I’d love to get my hands on some, not sure if I can get it in the UK though.

I bought the full collection of this when RH came out with it because I can never resist any of their collections! I may have just placed another order last night…at 1am…for the new Clover Trio. The RH site has free shipping AND a bonus polish of the month AND a mystery gift bag with every order!
