Do you love Lush Bath Bombs? Wait, that’s a silly question, of course you do. Well today I am going to show you how to make home made DIY Bath Bombs at home with only a few ingredients! It’s surprisingly easy and only takes about a half hour! I used the recipe from Rookie Mag to make mine and just changed the ingredients slightly.
Ingredients:
- Epsom salt
- Baking soda
- Citric acid powder (can be found at most health food stores and on Amazon)
- Water
- Coconut Oil melted – I used coconut oil but you can use olive oil or whatever other oil you prefer instead. I like coconut oil because of all it’s natural benefits (it’s moisturizing, antibacterial, great for reducing rashes and inflammation – the list goes on!)
Optional Ingredients:
- Essential Oils – You can choose whatever essential oils you’d like as long as they are safe to use on your skin (I feel like this is self explanatory but do not use oils meant for an oil burner. Mkay? It’s not meant for your skin). I chose Wild Orange essential oil from DoTerra as it’s great for reducing stress and anxiety. Perfect for a nice calming bath : ) You can find essential oils at most Health Food Stores, or you can pick them up online at DoTerra.com or Amazon.
- Food Colouring – Again, chose whatever colour you’d like! I used red food dye because I wanted them to turn out pink!
Other Supplies:
- Whisk
- Measuring cups
- Two mixing bowls (one small, one large)
- Molds – These will determine the shape of your bath bombs. You can use small bowls (like shown above) or I even used small measuring cups! If you have plastic eggs left over from Easter those are great too!
Step 1:
In the large bowl add baking soda, citric acid and Epsom salt and mix well with a spoon. The ratios will vary depending on how big of a batch you are making but use this ratio:
– 2 parts baking soda
– 1 part citric acid powder
– 1 part Epsom salt
I followed the Rookie Mag measurements and used two cups of baking soda, one cup of citric acid and one cup of Epsom salt.
Step 2:
In the smaller bowl mix together the wet ingredients. I used:
– 3 tsp of Wild Orange essential oil
– 3 tbsp of coconut oil
– 1 tsp of water
This part is not a science, you can add less or more essential oil depending on how much fragrance you prefer. Less water is better, because if you add too much it will fizz like crazy when you add it to the dry ingredients.
Step 3:
Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture one tablespoon at a time. If you add too much at once the mixture will start to fizz and all will be lost! Just kidding, but seriously you don’t want it to fizz. If it DOES just add more dry ingredients to the spot that’s fizzing and it will stop.
When you are done the mixture should have the consistency of wet sand.
Step 4:
Time to add some colour! I used 6 drops of red food colouring and it created a really nice light pink colour. Again, add slowly. You can see in the photo that the drops of dye have started to fizz, so I would recommend adding one drop at a time and mixing it in thoroughly.
Step 5:
Now all you have to do is put the mixture into your molds! Press hard and really pack it in to avoid it crumbling later on. Leave it in the molds for about 5 minutes then slowly remove them. You should be able to shimmy them out of the molds pretty easily, then leave them on a plate or paper towel to dry completely.
Remember to only let them sit in the molds for a few minutes. If you leave them in too long they will harden and won’t come out!
Here’s the finished product! You can experiment with this recipe and add different colours, oils and create different shapes. You could make seasonal bath bombs for Christmas or even Valentine’s Day. The possibilities are endless!
Let me know if you try this out yourself! What essential oil would you choose for your bath bombs? Peppermint? Lemon? Tea Tree? Let me know in the comments!

Thanks Jasmine! If only I had a plastic easter egg I could have made some round ones. The domes are good enough for now

This looks easy, and so much fun. Having a kid means I always have an overabundance of those darn eggs. Finally a use for them!

It didn’t make that much of a mess, the worst part was when I dropped the bottle of food colouring and it spilled all over the floor :/ I’m such a klutz!
