It’s takeover time! Kalyn Lord is guest posting this month and she is sharing with us her favourite purple lip shades! You may not know this, but she is the mastermind behind the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network. So basically she’s a genius. I’ve got a bit of a reputation going right now — thankfully, a departure from the sort of reputation one might get in high school after a few social missteps — although I could argue that being known for a love of purple lipstick is just another way to let your freak flag fly and proclaim your “artsy” or “goth” or “manic pixie dream girl” trope as much as any number of other stereotypical physical manifestations.
Not surprisingly, when it came to the theme of “purple”, my mind immediately wandered to the proud, bountiful collection of purple lip products sitting in my makeup room. There is something about a purple lip that just makes me infinitely happy. It isn’t totally out of the norm, like grey or green, but it is quirky enough to stand out in a sea of reds and pinks and nudes and corals.
Oh, and I happen to find it an incredibly flattering lip colour, for whatever reason. You don’t look cold (blue lipstick) or jaundiced (yellow lipstick) or crazy (white lipstick), and there are a variety of tones and shades to suit your needs. Purple lips for all! Here are my personal favourites:
Sleek MakeUP Pout Paint in Mauve Over:
Sometimes I want a purple that looks more pink than anything…but still purple. Does that make sense? In those instances, Sleek’s Pout Paint in Mauve Over is a clear winner — with strong warm undertones, it comes across as flatteringly orchid on the lips, not to mention unbelievably pigmented.
Annabelle TwistUp Lipstick in Royale (original review):
This is another one of those ‘pinky’ purples, and thanks to the semi-sheer formula, is extremely easy to wear…not to mention, in a very convenient, slim twist-up format. It is both comfortable and pigmented, and great for on-the-go application.
Makeup Revolution Lipstick in Depraved (original review):
When I’m in the mood for a glossy, flattering, easy-wear sort of cool-toned purple, I reach for this budget UK brand’s LE offering — Depraved is bright and glossy, with a satin finish that can build moderately well, but looks perfectly fine on its own. I especially like using Depraved over a darker liquid or pencil purple, for added dimension.
Revlon Matte Balm in Shameless (original review):
One of my original purples, the Revlon Matte Balm line has quickly grown to be one of my favourite lip products — easy to use, high-quality (as is often the case with Revlon’s products), and surprisingly flattering for being a fairly dark purple product from a mass produced brand.
Illamasqua Lipstick in Posture:
Posture is one of my newest acquisitions, and perhaps one of the strangest. It is a very pale mauve cream, virtually matte and opaque, but still reasonably creamy and comfortable, from a brand that is known for their off-the-wall products and colour selection. This lipstick borders on grey, and is almost pastel in a creepy sort of way. I happen to love it, especially when paired with a really dark, smoky eye — it’s like turning the classic mod 60s look on its side, with a slightly gothic, zombie-ish twist.
Thanks so much Kalyn for being my guest blogger thing month! I’m loving the purple lipsticks, I think Mauve Over is my favourite

I would have been disappointed if Kalyn had shared anything else so great to see purple sticks. I am SHOCKED there’s no mac though!

Dodgy Girl is a close 6th, but my OCD-like tendencies limit my ability to move beyond a list of an ‘even’ five!

Posture is such a cool shade! I love it

I love Royale, it’s such a gorgeously rich colour!

Did you say makeup room? That’s awesome. So is your love for purple lipstick. A great indicator of self confidence that you can wear them outside your house.
