I am a clothing buyer and designer, but if there’s one style constant in my life, it’s a bright lipstick. I quickly dismissed any beauty colour rules at a young age and decided I would wear any shade I wanted, which, for a dishwater ginger (auburn) with pale skin, could be risky. But, over my 20 years of wearing the stuff, I came to the realization that it’s not about the colour or the brand, it’s about confidence. How it makes you feel. Not a security blanket! Just an accessory that always makes me feel like I’m ready to go out the door, and if it’s the only exciting thing on my body, I will look somehow pulled together. Many of you feel the same way about a Celine bag or Prada shoes. I just end up spending less money on my must have staple.
I was actually shocked when I thought about how I’ve never applied any of my style profiles to the lipstick that I’m wearing. As in, do I only wear YSL 26 when it’s sunny outside, or when I’m feeling sassy? Is Underage Red only for first dates and rock concerts? And what piece in my wardrobe is so loud or so subdued that I would automatically gravitate for a nude lip color?
I decided to choose my top 3 lip sticks and put together outfits around them, giving them the top billing they deserve! Clothing featured is a mix of pieces from my new store The Jet Set Clothing, my own designs, and whatever I pull out of my 200 square foot closet.
MAC Ruby Woo
Let’s start with my perfect red, Ruby Woo by MAC. In fact, I think it’s everyone’s perfect red due to the equal mix of cool and warm tones, and it’s a matte finish that actually moisturizes, which always blows my mind a little. And not to be cliche, but a bright red lip always adds an edge to whatever you’re wearing, so I paired it with some of my favorite rocknroll pieces.
YSL Rouge Pur Couture Satin Radiance Lipstick in 52 Rouge Rose
One of the big trends this season is metallics, and nothing goes better with red than gold, right?
First of all, if you are thinking of splurging on this color, bite the bullet and buy two, because it is often out of stock due to it’s unique colour, versatility and of course, the classic parisienne rose smell. Secondly, though this piece is, again, a splurge at $40 (depending on what part of the world you’re in), good luck finding any dupes of this colour. YSL has figured out some formula that apparently no company can crack!
This neon coral is a really fun color and I think it would perfectly compliment any whimsical spring dress or wild print. One things for sure- this color thrives in the sunlight, so I chose a chambray dress and tried to look my Springiest!
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bolero
Because I am a person who thinks neon orange is a neutral, I am very selective about my nudes. For years my nude go to was Nars’ Honolulu Honey, and then the line came out with a matte pencil called Bolero. I’ve never looked back. This is as bright and as fluo as a neutral color can get, and it’s a great mixer if you need to tone down brighter shades (but, like, why would you).
PS, this post could have easily gone on for 300 more pages because there is no better lipstick collection than Nars. Period. Schiap, Jungle Red and Fire Down Below are the other 3 shades I wear on a daily basis!
Need advice on finding your perfect bright lipstick? Ruby Woo and YSL 52 are shades that match almost any skin tone, so I would start by trying those on, and if you feel uncertain about the shades with your coloring, get your beauty consultant to show you one shade darker or lighter. You should have your perfect bright in no time.
