#AJoyfulReno: Our Bathroom Renovation Pt. 2

April 13, 2017 8 Comments

The bathroom tile has arrived! One of the most exciting things about renovating the bathroom was picking out the tile. We decided to go with this beautiful 2″ Hexagon Netted tile in grey from Pratt & Larson! This will be for the floor and we are using white subway tile (also from Pratt & Larson) for the shower. James has some interesting ideas on how to install the subway tile to make it look a bit more unique, but more on that in a later post. The tile is still in the packaging because it won’t be installed for another week or so, but I had to share a photo because it’s just so darn pretty. It took about a month for it to arrive because all of Pratt & Larson’s tile is hand-made in Portland. It was totally worth the wait. We are still deciding if we want to go with a light or a dark grey grout. Suggestions are welcome in the comments!

While things are certainly moving along we still have a lot to do. Here are a few before/after photos showing the progress so far.

Before

After

Those pipes will eventually connect to the sinks but we are waiting for the vanity to arrive before we can install the sinks and that will likely be another 3-4 weeks. Thankfully we have a functional bathroom on the main floor 🙂

We have walls people! While this bathroom isn’t good for much other than towel storage at the moment, it’s so fun seeing the space come together bit by bit. We moved one of the walls about two feet so it makes the room feel a lot larger. It’s amazing how just a few feet can totally transform a space. It allowed us to change the whole layout and make it a lot more functional.

Before

After

This side of the bathroom looks totally different! The tub is where the toilet was, and the toilet will eventually go to the left of that shelving unit. The tub is installed but none of the fixtures have been added so it still looks pretty bare bones. We are putting white quartz around the edge of the tub so it won’t have the wood that you see here (although it does look kind of cool!) I wasn’t quite sure about this under-mounted tub, but I trusted James and I’m so glad I did. It looks amazing and it’s a sleek modern look that I really like. I’m usually more of a rustic gal myself, but James wins on this one!

Those skylights were already there when we moved in and I love how much natural light they bring into the space. I’ve never lived somewhere with three windows in a bathroom. Luxury over here haha! The drywall still needs to be finished in that small section near the ceiling and then plastering and sanding can be done. That’s the final step before we can install the subway tile around the tub!

We decided to go with a pocket door and while it wasn’t our first choice, it works well in this layout. The bathroom door is right at the top of the stairs so if it opened outward it would block the walkway up the stairs. If it opened inward it would make the bathroom feel really cramped. In order to optimize the space we decided the pocket door was the best solution.

That’s all for this update! I can’t wait to show you more once cabinets, tile and sinks are installed. Thanks for coming along on this journey will us! If you have any questions please leave them in the comments and I will get back to you 🙂

I can’t wait to see it come along! We are currently making design decisions for a bathroom renovation and it is hard to decide! I actually just saw some grey hexagon tiles today that I am considering for the floor. You have good taste. 😉 We will be doing a pocket door as well, since our bathroom is tiny and don’t want to lose out on any space!

Haha I feel like hex tile is very trendy right now and I don’t mind one bit! I love it 🙂 Good luck on your bathroom reno!
